UNIQUE DORDT

What makes dordrecht so unique?

Dordrecht is a city with character: centuries of history, water, monuments and a location that offers both tranquility and dynamism. As the oldest city in Holland, with city rights since 1220, Dordrecht is rooted in the Middle Ages. This city breathes history in every stone and jetty, but is just as alive in its bustling terraces, its cultural festivals and artists who find inspiration at every turn.

In Dordrecht you walk past centuries-old warehouses and monuments, hear the lapping of the river, taste local dishes in hidden streets and find peace and quiet in courtyards and parks. The city invites you to contemplate its beauty: from the three-river point where Merwede, Noord and Oude Maas meet to the evening light twinkling over the water.

Van Gijn House

Huis Van Gijn is a charming museum house on the Nieuwe Haven in Dordrecht, which takes you back to the Dordrecht of around 1900. This is the authentic residence of the wealthy collector Simon van Gijn (1836-1922), built in the 18th century and furnished as a museum since 1925.

The National Museum of Education offers a fascinating look at the history of education in the Netherlands. With a collection of over 350,000 objects, including old school records, reading books and school desks, this museum is a feast of recognition for young and old.

Old Port

The Oude Haven is the oldest harbor in Dordrecht and dates back to the 12th century. This is where the first trading ships moored, which formed the basis for the flourishing of Dordrecht as a trading city. Today, you will find historic ships and monumental buildings along the quay, which together keep the medieval atmosphere alive. It is an atmospheric place to stroll and imagine how people traded and lived here for centuries.

The Dordrecht Museum

The Dordrecht Museum has been around since 1842 and is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. It houses an impressive collection of over six centuries of Dutch painting, from the Renaissance to contemporary art, in beautifully designed exhibitions.

The Wolwevershaven is one of the most beautiful harbors of Dordrecht, surrounded by stately warehouses and monumental buildings. Historic ships are often docked here, giving the place a unique atmosphere. It is an ideal place to stroll along the waterfront and experience the city's rich maritime history.

The Three Rivers Point is where the Old Meuse, Lower Merwede and North rivers meet. From here you can see the impressive streams of water flowing together and there is always activity from passing barges. It is a special place to experience the dynamics of Dordrecht as a water city.

hospitality & shopping

hospitality

Dordrecht is home to more than enough unusual and fun catering establishments.

On Wijnstraat you will find stylish restaurants and wine bars where you can go for a sumptuous dinner or a good glass of wine.

Near the Great Church is the atmospheric Herbs & Jasmine, known for its specialty teas. For a unique spot with a view, there is Villa Augustus, located in an old water tower with a large garden where many ingredients are grown in-house.

The historic harbors have cozy terraces like Finn's and Doka, perfect for sitting along the waterfront.

For coffee and homemade cake, Nobel's Brood and Dordts Genoegen are popular addresses with locals and visitors alike. In this way, the Dordrecht hospitality industry combines history with contemporary taste.

Shopping

Dordrecht has a surprisingly diverse shopping scene where you will find both well-known chains and unique boutiques.

The Voorstraat in Dordrecht is the longest shopping street in the Netherlands. Here you can stroll endlessly past fashion stores, specialty stores and cozy cafes.

For unusual boutiques and concept stores, Vriesestraat and Nieuwstraat are highly recommended, with a mix of vintage, design and local products.

Those who love cozy streets should definitely explore the Wijnstraat and Bagijnhof, where history and contemporary stores complement each other nicely.

Thus, shopping in Dordrecht combines the best of both worlds: big brands and hidden gems in an atmospheric historical setting.
